James was born in Hartlepool on 27th July 1889. He was Baptsied at St James Church on 14th August 1889.

The following Census details from 1891, 1901 and 1911 show James living in different areas of the city. He is shown on the 1889 Census living in Durham Street which is in the East End of Sunderland but he was born in Harlepool only two years earlier. This means that his family had moved in the intervening years. James's father was also called James Cooper Clarke.

 

The 1891 Census shows James at 2 years old living in Durham Street, in the East End.

 

The 1901 Census shows the family living in Lucknow Street Sunderland. (Two Pages).

 

The 1911 Census does not show James (Junior).
