H.M.S Hood 1934-38. H.M.S. Durban 1938 - 1941 on Atlantic, Pacific and Baltic Convoy duties. Joseph was stationed at H.M.S. Sultan in Singapore prior to it falling and was wounded by a Japanese air attack then invalided back to the United Kingdom. He was later stationed in the United States. Joseph's Service ended in 1946 after 12 years of service. He later served as a reservist from 1950-55 (Korea).

Joseph was born on 18th May 1911 in Hanover Place, Deptford, Sunderland.
Joseph worked in mining from 1925 to 1934 at Wearmouth Colliery as a mixer. He then joined the Royal Navy until 1946. From 1946 to 1965 he worked as a District Relief Porter for British Railways.
Joseph was awarded 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star with France and Germany clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
