"Billy" was born in Houghton Le Spring in 1919 and joined the Army in July 1939. He was posted to France until being evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940.  In 1941 He was posted to Egypt until being sent back to England because of illness in 1943. He was medically discharged from the army.

Prior to joining the army Billy worked as miner. He went back into mining after his medical discharge until his death in 1957.

Billy had a passion for his family and his dogs. He was a popular workmate at the Hetton and Lambton Collieries where he worked.
